Should There Be a Traffic Light at Hills East? [POLL]

A petition to add a traffic light and cross walk re-emerges after Wednesday's hit and run.

After a Half Hollow Hills senior was on Wednesday outside of High School East, a petition calling for an added traffic light and crosswalk to the area re-emerged.

The petition was started by Joshua Shinbrot, a senior at and leader in the local chapter of the National Federation of American Students. He and his classmates began collecting signatures from community members last school year after several car accidents, inlucing one in which an alumna suffered brain damage, occured at the exit of the high school.

The petition re-surfaced online Wednesday when an 18-year-old male student was airlifted to Stony Brook Universtiy Medical Center after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street. The vehicle then fled the scene.

The petition calls for a traffic light to be installed on Vanderbilt Parkway at the intersection between the west side exit from Half Hollow Hills High School East, Vanderbilt Parkway and Farm View Drive.

As a student and a driver, a traffic light and a cross walk would definitely increase the safety of Vanderbilt outside of HS East. While some incidents may be related to negligence, new lights would definitely prevent additional issues.

Definitely add the light. A relative of mine had an accident there last year. Or at least dont allow left turns(westbound) from the parking lot. Visibility is not the greatest and there are many young drivers around.

I think one crosswalk and a traffic light with green arrows would greatly improve the situation.

A traffic signal at a school is considered a "private" entrance and the district would have to fund the entire cost. Would they be willing? I know because we tried to get a traffic light at my kids' school which is on an even busier road and our district wouldn't.

From what I understand, since Vanderbilt is a county road, and this is not an exit-only traffic light (it covers Vanderbilt and the perpendicular road), the county would be responsible.
