Stern Sponsors Pharmaceutical Disposal Day

Event will be held Sunday at Half Hollow Hills West High School

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern, D-Huntington, is teaming with the Half Hollow Hills School District at its Unity Day Fair to host a community-wide pharmaceutical disposal day.

Residents interested in disposing of expired or unused medication may visit Hills West High School on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Over-the-counter and prescription medications, including antibiotics and controlled substances, have been detected in drinking water supplies in a number of municipalities around the country and this pro-active step will prevent Suffolk County from facing this problem, Stern said. It will also reduce the potential for children and young adults to gain access to these medications.

All pharmaceuticals will be placed into a lock box on a voluntary basis. The medications will then be disposed of in an environmentally safe way.
