East Student Named Intel Semi-Finalist

Alex Devarajan is one of 50 Long Islanders cited for science work.

Alex Devarajan, 16, a student at Half Hollow Hills High School East, was named a semi-finalist Wednesday in the Intel Science Talent Search.

HIs project title was "Ethyl Pyruvate Attenuates Systemic Inflammation Via Inhibition of Inflammasome Activation."

The Melville teen was one of 300 students recognized around the country, and one of 50 Long Islanders. The 40 finalists will be announced Jan. 22.

They will be invited to Washington, D.C. in March to participate in final judging, display their work to the public, meet with notable scientists, and compete for the top award of $100,000.
