Dix Hills Performing Arts Center Announces Fall Lineup

The arts center at Five Towns College has a slew of shows to entertain residents this fall.

The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center is a lot of things to a lot of different people. Some people go there to see a comedy show. Others go to see a musical or a drama. Others go to see a magician. Others know them for their world-class music, jazz concerts, tribute bands, and even The Great American Songbook.

And this fall is no exception at the  500-seat theater on the campus of Five Towns College, where it entertains more than 20,000 Long Islanders each year.

Leading off the September/October line-up will be Desert Highway, performing the music of The Eagles on Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Desert Highway has made a name for itself as the premier Eagles tribute band. Despite having been together for less than three years, they have gained a reputation as the truest-sounding Eagles tribute band in the country, and have received praise throughout North America and Europe.

The music of the weekend continues on Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. as international jazz vibraphonist and percussion teacher at Five Towns College, Bryan Cabbott, pays tribute to Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet. Joining him is Halley Hiatt paying tribute to the one of the great jazz singing talents from the bebop era, the incomparable Sarah Vaughan.

This weekend ends on a magical note. On Sept. 12 at 2 p.m., international master magician Scott Interrante amazes, amuses and mystifies with a mixture of classic magic and modern illusions.

The center caps the month of September off with the world-renowned Amazing Accordion Kings. Angelo DiPippo, Frank Toscono and Manny Corallo will perform on Sept. 19 at 2 p.m.

Opening the month of October is Five Towns College's own playwright-in-residence John Blenn with his comedy, "Say Something Important." This complex slice-of-life serio-comedy tells the story of a terminally ill character actor who decided to return home to the East Coast to reconcile with a family he left behind in search for fame and fortune years earlier. Don't miss this on Oct. 1 thru Oct. 3.

On Oct. 9, the center will  offer a reading of "The Canterville Ghost & The Thought" on its main stage. In addition, the reading will be simultaneously broadcast on The Five Towns College Radio Station, WFTU –1570 AM.

Also coming in October, the theater celebrates John Lennon's 70th Birthday on Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. A multimedia celebration and live concert will feature Joe Kuhl and X-Session performing the classics of Lennon and the Beatles such as "Imagine" and "I am the Walrus." The music will be accompanied by images and video highlighting Lennon's life. All proceeds of this event will benefit the John Lennon Scholarship Fund.

The Five Towns College also has a second stage, The Studio Theater, which hosts comedy shows, such as the Theatrical Comedy Festival, scheduled for Oct. 28 thru Oct.  30.

Other October events include a tribute to Lennie Tristano, the great jazz pianist, on Oct. 15. A tribute to the women of rock with Jill Gioia follows on Oct. 29, and a tribute to the Mongo Santamaria, the Latin Jazz great follows on Oct. 30. Rounding out the center's October lineup is their Fall Guitar Festival running from Oct. 22 thru Oct. 24.
