District Relocates Gifted Program

The district moves AHAP classes from central office building to Forest Park Elementary.

The Half Hollow Hills program for intellectually gifted children has a new home for the 2011/2012 school year.

The AHAP (Academically High Aptitude Program) classrooms have been re-located from the to .

The program was created in Half Hollow Hills in 1978, identifying gifted children in grades 3-5, who are capable of high performance on standardized tests. A small percentage of the highest achievers are invited to participate in AHAP. Students who do not qualify receive enrichment services within their own elementary schools.

Learning within the AHAP classroom includes “a hierarchy of cognitive skills within units which are parallel to the core curriculum,” the district notes. The students are encouraged to share their experience with peers in their regular school classroom environment. Students from the district’s seven elementary schools are bused once a week to Forest Park, where classes are taught by two teachers, Valerie Geiler and Caryn Meirs.
