HS West Environmental Club Raises Over $3,000 to Help the Impoverished

The Half Hollow Hills High School West Environmental Club is proud to announce that they were able to raise $3,010 to be donated to Heifer International, a nonprofit organization working to eradicate poverty and hunger through sustainable, values based holistic community development.

Heifer International's mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth.  This substantial sum was raised this year through bake sales, sale of clubmade soda can top bracelets, and their largest fundraiser, The Earth Day Cafe, held on Earth Day as a celebration of the environment.

The money was donated to Heifer International and will be used to purchase tree seedlings, an irrigation pumper, Biogas Methane stoves for the villages, and the Joy to the World “gift basket” which includes two sheep, four goats, and two llamas. These donations give the community soft woven wool, milk, fertilizer, and stable income for food, clothing, medicine and school tuition.

The mission of the Environmental Club is to permit motivated students the opportunity to pursue topics not normally covered in the science curriculum. Members are focused on becoming more aware of issues that face our community, school and the world. The Club works towards making a difference globally.

The Club was founded in 2009 by Layla Vita, a teacher at High School West.  The club is made up of approximately 20 students from High School West and meets weekly to plan for future fundraisers as well as maintain the recycling issues of the high school. If you would like to donate or would like more information, please contact Layla Vita at lvita@hhh.k12.ny.us.
