West Hollow Art Students Display Work

Studio in Art class showcases its talent around Half Hollow Hills.

Studio in Art students in Elisa Brosnan’s class at has been showcasing its talents around town for residents to enjoy.

Recently, the class depicted two different art concepts at a local coffee shop.

Brosnan explained that the self-portrait artwork created by students was inspired by Chuck Close, an artisan “who uses grids to break subjects down to smaller areas.” Part of this process includes textures, patterns, light and dark values within each grid. “From a distance, our eye optically mixes the values and creates the image of their faces,” she said.

The other form of art presented was printmaking. Following a class trip to the Elizabeth Morton Wildlife refuge in Noyack near Sag Harbor, students learned about the solarplate printmaking technique by artisan Dan Welden. Each student was given a pre-coated plate that they incised with a stick. After getting in touch with nature, the class visited Mr. Welden’s studio, where they exposed, washed, and printed their plates.

The showcase is presently on display in the Atrium at West Hollow Middle School.
