Hills West Alum Stephen Bowen Signs with Redskins

Former Hofstra defensive end spent the first four seasons of career in Dallas.

Half Hollow Hills West alum Stephen Bowen has signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Redskins, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday afternoon.

Schefter tweeted that the deal is for five years, $27.5 million that includes $12.5 million in guarantees.

Bowen, who played at Hofstra University on Long Island, was an undrafted free-agent when he signed with the Cowboys in 2006.

Two days ago Bowen told ESPN that he preferred to stay in Dallas, but salary cap issues across the league have teams and players scrambling.

"I know Dallas wants me and I'd love to be back," Bowen told ESPN. "I don't know what's happening and hopefully I'll be back."

He played one game in 2006, then saw considerable time as a back up in 2007, recording 23 tackles. His playing time increased after that and he became a regular in 2008, playing in 14 games and eventually the full season in 2009 and 2010.

Bowen, who entered the NFL the same year as Hofstra teammates Marques Colston (New Orleans) and Willie Colon (Pittsburgh) has recorded 72 career tackles and 5.5 sacks.

The Redskins have had a busy week, dealing defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to New England and quarterback Donovan McNabb to Minnesota.

Washington has not released an official statement about signing Bowen.

He also has not officially updated his employer on his Facebook profile yet either.
