Hills West Wranglerettes Are National Champs

HHH High School West dance team comes out on top in competition season.

The Wranglerettes have done it again. The Half Hollow Hills High School West dance team took home three national championship trophies this year during its competition season.

Last month, the team received jazz and modern dance trophies in the Eastern Cheer and Dance Association’s Big Apple National Classic, which was hosted at the high school. Then earlier this month, the Wranglerettes headed to Disney World in Orlando, Fla. to take on even tougher competition. The team took home a grand championship trophy in the hip-hop genre and another for best in category. Coach Lucille Kenney was also honored for attending the competition for the past 20 years.

One week after their Disney World wins, the team competed in Eastern Cheer and Dance Association’s Nationals, a two-day competition held at the Alabama Theater in Myrtle Beach, SC. The girls earned the grand champion trophies in hip-hop and modern dance.

The team was at a disadvantage early in season, having lost its most experienced members to graduation, but the girls beat the odds and came out on top.

“I have a young team this year, as I lost nine seniors last year. I didn’t know what to expect, but the team rose to the situation and gave great performances,” Kenney said.

While the girls have danced their way to the top, they’re not done yet. Their season finale is the MSG Varsity Talent Show, in which the top eight teams from the tri-state area will compete for television viewer votes to win.

Filming begins next week and the competition will be aired on Sunday April 15 at 8 p.m. on channel 14 on Cabelvision. Viewers will then vote online at MSGVarsity.com. Residents do not need to be a Cabelvision customer to vote. If the Wranglerettes place in the top four, they will move on to round two.
