Photos: Hills Little League Opening Day/Parade

It was a perfect opening day for little league Saturday.

It was a beautiful day to play ball on Saturday.

A couple thousand young sluggers and fans marched from to Otsego Park to celebrate opening day for Half Hollow Hills Little League.

The 25th annual parade was lead by the marching band and the Dix Hills Fire Department.

Steve Muraco, the little league commissioner, opened the ceremonies by thanking the parents, players, marching band, Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone, Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, County Legis. Steve Stern, Councilwomen Susan Berland and Glenda Jackson and all who worked so hard behind the scenes to get the fields ready for the season.

A very special thanks went to a 13-year-old little leaguer, Sam Ferbin. Sam donated $1,170 from his bar mitzvah to Hills Challenger Baseball. The Challenger league gives players uniforms, equipment and a place to play without charge.

"Sam decided that if he donated money it would help support the league so that the Challenger League could continue," Sam's mom, Brynn Ferbin, said. "He felt good about this decision because he loves baseball so much and he can see first hand how much it means to the kids in the league."

Opening day also recognized the success that Hills Little League had last season with the 10-year-old girls winning the District 34 title and becoming Section 6 champions. This Hills team was only one game away from going to Williamsport, and playing teams from around the world.

With nearly 2,000 players and 175 teams, Hills is one of the largest little league organizations in the country.
