The Friars, coming off a last-minute, 17-16 defeat in the CHSFL Class AAA championship game to rival Chaminade, kick off 2013 with a Sept. 7 road date against St. Joseph’s Collegiate.

St. Joe’s went 8-3 and fell to Bishop Timon-St. Jude in Monsignor Martin semifinals.

The 2013 schedule doesn’t get any easier. The Friars play five road dates, including three in a row to start the season. St. Anthony’s plays its home opener Sept. 27 against Staten Island’s Farrell.

St. Anthony’s (8-3) played the toughest schedule imaginable a year ago, hosting Jersey power Bergen Catholic while facing rivals Chaminade, Iona Prep and Farrell on the road.

And all while Coach Rich Reichert chased the record for career wins in Suffolk County.

Bergen Catholic put up 59 points on the Friars in an eye-opening season opener. St. Anthony’s then fell to Iona Prep before pulling out close wins against Chaminade and Farrell. The ship appeared to be righted until the Flyers kicked a late field goal and blocked the last-second attempt by St. Anthony’s in the title game.

Despite the hiccup, MaxPreps recently listed St. Anthony’s as the top football dynasty in New York state with a 100-11 record over the last decade.

The Friars have played in 19 of the last 20 CHSFL title games.

The quest for a championship begins anew at the South Huntington school.
