Sunset Sail For LI Boating Season

Half Hollow Hills residents sailed through summer. And it's been one of the most significant boating seasons in recent memory.

Titanic's 100-year anniversary marked the start of a headline-grabbing and mishap-filled summer, highlighted by tragedy on the waters off Oyster Bay when in a capsizing July 4.

Saturday saw the boating community gather for the biggest and last event of the season, . The Jolly Roger flew overhead as pleasure craft of every stripe gathered in Huntington Harbor. Hours later, "Gladiator" star Russell Crowe got a well-documented lift from the after from Cold Spring Harbor.

That's life on the crowded harbors and bays along the Long Island Sound. If you live on Long Island's North Shore, chances are you own a boat or ventured out with someone who does.

Labor Day weekend traditionally signals the climax of summer and the beginning of the end for the Long Island boating season. Your restless crew goes back to school and conditions on the water start to cool.

But plenty of boaters enjoy wet weekends into November. So when is it time to store your boat?

Regardless of your ultimate port of call, the summer of 2012 won't be forgotten anytime soon.
