Top Long Island Summer Events of the Week

Bluegrass Festival, Dirty Sock Run and a Kris Allen concert are among the highlights.

As part of our 2012 Long Island Summer Guide, each Wednesday we're spotlighting the major beach and outdoor events coming up across the Island.

Here's what's on tap in the coming week:

Dirty Sock 10K Run
The Babylon Rotary Club sponsors this annual 10K run to benefit local food pantries. This year it's being held on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 8 a.m. at Babylon Memorial Grade School on Park Avenue. Register online here or at the race from 6:30 - 7:30 a.m. (rain or shine).

BACCA's 10th Annual Bluegrass Festival
The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts and the Town of Babylon present the Long Island Bluegrass Festival at Tanner Park in Copiague on Saturday, August 18, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. (rain or shine). General admission is $15. Free parking. Bring a lawn chair. More details here.

Free Movie Day at Tackapausha Museum
Every Sunday is Free Movie Day at Tackapausha Museum & Preserve in Seaford. Family films, nature documentaries are shown throughout the day (11 a.m. - 4 p.m.), along with live animal exhibits and crafts. All ages. Fee - Free with regular admission to Museum ($3).

Fresh in the Park Starring Kris Allen and Daniel Powder
Fresh FM Presents: Fresh in the Park on Saturday, Aug. 18 at Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. The show will feature 2010 American Idol winner Kris Allen and Daniel Powter, known for the hit, “Bad Day.” There is no formal seating at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre so concertgoers are urged to bring folding chairs or blankets. 

Family Festival of Fun
After a 20 years hiatus, the Ss. Cyril and Methodius R.C. Church in Deer Park will once again be hosting its Family Festival of Fun to raise funds for the SSCM Parish School. The celebration will kick off on Wednesday, Aug. 15, with a 5 p.m. Mass and 6 p.m. processional, followed by a 50 year anniversary alumni reunion on Friday and raffle drawing on Sunday night. The festival will feature carnival favorites including a ferris wheel.
