A Day for Strays

Dr. Ali and other docs took the day to neuter cats at Dix Hills Animal Hospital on Sunday.

Dix Hills Animal Hospital is normally closed on Sundays and they don't perform surgeries on the weekends at all.

But this past Sunday was different.

For the second year in a row  Rhein and her staff at Dix Hills Animal Hospital volunteered their time, expertise and facilities to help Last Hope---an organization that has been dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of stray, abandoned and death-due pound animals.

Yesterday’s goal was to spay and neuter as many stray cats as could safely be captured and brought in. All of this to help with the overpopulation of strays.

There were eight veterinarians there to perform close to 100 surgeries.  As well, approximately 30 volunteers--including students from Half Hollow Hills High Schools East and West.

They were responsible for helping to prep the cats for surgery and then transporting them to post-op for recovery.

Dr. Ali said: "The students were remarkably helpful and seemed to get so much out of the experience. I think it all went smoothly and I was happy to help the local cat population. Thank you especially to Last Hope for their contribution of resources and people to make this a successful day."

The day began at 8 a.m. and didn’t end until 8 p.m. Not exactly a day of rest, but a long and successful day.
