Dix Hills Attorney Cheryl Helfer Earns Pro Bono Honors

Helfer is named the Nassau County Bar Association's Pro Bono Attorney for July/August 2013.

Submitted by the Nassau County Bar Association

Cheryl Helfer of Dix Hills is a successful matrimonial attorney who never hesitates when there is an opportunity to give back to the community.

Last summer a young woman came to Helfer's Bellmore law office seeking a divorce. After a brief conversation, she recognized that this woman was a victim of domestic abuse and needed the services of the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence. She provided the woman with the 24/7 Coalition hotline number (516-542-0404), described the services offered and encouraged her to call. Helfer then called the Coalition's Pro Bono Project, explained the situation and offered to represent the young woman on a pro bono, or no fee, basis.  The woman did call the hotline and is now being represented by one of the best matrimonial attorneys in New York.

For her generosity and kindness in pro bono representation of this client and many other  domestic abuse clients, and for the countless hours she spends each year on other pro bono matters, Nassau County Bar Association President Peter J. Mancuso has named her the Pro Bono Attorney for July/August 2013.
