Art in the Park Fine Art and Craft Fair returns to town June 2-3.
The Art League of Long Island’s Art in the Park Fine Art and Craft Fair will return to the scenic Heckscher Park in Huntington on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3. The event is an Art League tradition that has attracted thousands of art lovers for 45 years. The free craft fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, rain or shine. The fair showcases the orginal work of about 70 artists and craftspeople who will be selling paintings, photographs, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, glasswork, wearable art, and more. Prizes will be awarded to the top artists. This year, radio station 94X, along with a panel of judges will select Huntington’s First “Idol” through a talent competition. Next year's Half Hollow Hills school budget easily passed on Tuesday with a voter approval rate of 69 percent. Residents voted in favor of the $221,918,299 spending plan by a margin of 1573-710. The proposed budget represents a 2.75 percent increase over the current budget and a 2.33 tax levy tax hike, which stays within the state's limit. Despite the tax levy cap, schools in Half Hollow Hills will be spared the severe instructional and program cuts that have inflicted several other Long Island districts. All school buildings will remain open and the district will continue to provide the same level of instruction as it has, Superintendent Kelly Fallon said. Half Hollow Hills residents approved next year's school budget on Tuesday by 69 percent. "We did it," exclaimed Superintendent Kelly Fallon as the results were announced in the High School East gymnasium around 10:30 p.m. Residents voted in favor of the $221,918,299 spending plan by a margin of 1573-710. Christian Tarantino faces a third life sentence after convicted of conspiring to kill an informant.
A Dix Hills gym owner was found guilty in federal court in Central Islip on Monday of conspiring to kill an informant in a 2003 murder plot. Christian Tarantino was convicted last year of two murders in 1994 and accused of Vincent Gargiulo's death, all in connection with an armored van robbery. Christian Tarantino, 43, is already facing two mandatory life sentenced for the previous murder convictions, and now he faces a third after a jury found him guilty of conspiring to have Gargiulo, the brother-in-law of Twisted Sister lead singer Dee Snider, killed. The Town touts its eco-friendly efforts at annual event.
The annual Earth Day Celebration at Town Hall in Lindenhurst was smaller this year, but well-attended, despite the drizzle and the threat of heavier rain. The Town showed off its eco-friendly efforts, such as its Long Island Green Homes Program. Fabco Industries and Covanta, which for the past 20 years has operated the town’s resource recovery facility located by the town’s old landfill in West Babylon, was also there. The Town of Babylon Animal Shelter was there, too, with some doggie ambassadors seeking forever homes: Dan, Remi and Darwin, a four-and-half-year-old lab mix.
