PJ - In Gallup polls since 1944, only about 20% of the public has supported the current system ofRead More awarding all of a state's electoral votes to the presidential candidate who receives the most votes in each separate state (with 70% opposed and about 10% undecided). A Washington Post, Kaiser Family Foundation, and Harvard University poll showed 72% support for direct nationwide election of the President. Support for a national popular vote is strong among Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, as well as every demographic group in virtually every state surveyed in recent polls. * * * * * Most Americans don't ultimately care whether their presidential candidate wins or loses in their state . . . they care whether he/she wins the White House. Voters want to know, that even if they were on the losing side, their vote actually was directly and equally counted and mattered to their candidate. Most Americans think it would be wrong for the candidate with the most popular votes to lose. We don't allow this in any other election in our representative republic.
Greg Martinez April 16, 2014 at 01:16 am
The destruction of the Constitutional Electoral College is just another nail in the coffin of theRead More United States Constitution. If the people of New York vote for a candidate who loses the national popular vote by lets say 1% we will have all our electoral votes stolen from us and awarded to the other candidate. Every idiot state legislator who voted for this (regardless of party) should be defeated. They have literally put in place a law that in some circumstances will nullify the votes of the people of NY. The level of stupidity of our state legislators is now established beyond doubt. As for Mario Jr., he is for anything that helps the national agenda of socialism.
David April 16, 2014 at 06:11 am
I'm a voter who certainly doesn't support this idea. How can New York make such a pledge? What ifRead More it would someday require our electors to vote for someone who did not win in our state? This sounds illegal to me.

This is why we should lower the drinking age to 18. The teens would be safe inside a local barRead More instead of trying to sneak away on a bus. I f you are old enough to fight in the army for Uncle Sam you should be able to vote and drink at 18! Thankyou Abby Hoffman!
RITA April 16, 2014 at 01:18 am
This is such BS most teenagers drink and most parents are very aware and there is nothing they an doRead More about it! And if any of you are parents of teens and hunk different about your kids your in denial. Prom is soon here and I can assure you these same buses will be driving the kids after prom all over from montauk to manhatten and the kids will be drinking as they do every year and as long as the driver didn't supply the alcohol and he wasnt drinking how is he supposed to take responsibility for all these kids and what they are doing... Get a life and stop trying to be super parent cause your kids are drinking and probably getting high as well and like someone else said drinking age SHOUld just go back to 18 cause they all do it anyway and only drink worse and stronger stuff because they have no where to go and always trying to rush to get drunk faster before I eons busts in on their teen years of trying to hae in THE SAME WAY ALL YOUR LYING ASSES DID WHEN YOU WERE THEIR AGE! maybe if you taught them to do things in a responsible manner they would learn the proper way to act as they grow cause I can tell you this THEY ARE GOING TO DO THESE THINGS WITH OR WITHOUT YOIR APPROVAL ! They can be the smartest kid in school and yes they are drinking and yes having SEX also!!!

Bruce Cummings April 15, 2014 at 10:05 pm
@Kim Johnson. Not that it matters, but you have your facts wrong. President Barack Obama nominatedRead More Leonhart for the position of DEA Administrator on 2/2/2010. The issue here is people should be able to shop at a store without being followed or have the NSA track each word I am typing.

It is understandable that people assumed the worst when learning about a 35 year old taking photosRead More in a school. I certainly thought someone was casing the place for a future crime when I first heard the report. BUT...if you knew James you would know that he is a perpetual man child who often posts photos of himself in the woods and other remote areas. I know this is hard to believe, but if you knew James it would make sense. I'm in no way making excuses for trespassing. He knows he screwed up, and is upset how this reflects on his character.

Andrew Scott April 15, 2014 at 11:09 pm
Mike - we live in a country where most people CANNOT distinguish between the American Flag, theRead More Puerto Rican Flag, and the Cuban flag, for crying out loud. The Confederate flag uses the SAME stars, stripes, and red/white/blue AS WELL, just in a different configuration. In this context, I severely doubt that the flag, would cause most young onlookers to act negatively, unless they were prompted to do so, and /or unless the flag-bearers were acting out in an offensive/aggressive manner. The SWASTIKA - on the other hand - uses completely different imagery, and is easily identifiable as a symbol of deadly hate.

10 days no school work, a vacation for the offenders. Have the come to school instead, deliver aRead More paper to the entire student body describing how they came to a game wearing a symbol of hatred and racism, and why that was wrong. Just an afterthought whats the death toll from heroin on Long Island this year?
A_M_O_V April 15, 2014 at 09:15 pm
The only thing Mr. Bellone and Mr. Spencer could be proud of is the pioneering aspect of this pieceRead More of legislation. Yes they are the first who sign a legislation that would become a detriment for generations, unless at some point and I hope sooner than later the law would be reversed and possibly incorporate age change for alcohol use to 18. It is about time that government officials will get advice from professionals. We are telling our kids not to drink alcohol and not to smoke at an age in which the urge to do the opposite is so high. The most difficult thing for the government to do is promote education that requires high caliber people with energy and sophistication. No one argues the danger in smoking and excessive drinking but when you make it illegal people would like it more. Focus on education and don’t spend valuable money on enforcing something that definitely won't do any good.

This was out in my neck of the woods. All really great kids, college bound and starting their adultRead More lives. Having lost a child, I can say these families will mourn for as long as they live, and will have to find a "new normal" as EVERYTHING is changed for them now...I wish them strength, there is nothing quite like burying a child. Appreciated are the messages of respect and sympathy. It can be annoying to get news from areas other than your own, however the new Patch is doing things differently, and show no evidence of changing it back.....my best advice would be to ignore stories not in your area, and to write your editor directly, and share your comments with those who can make changes.

OK, let me take a wild guess here...This is Massachusetts so it shouldn't be that difficult toRead More figure it out. These two crack heads in their 40's are on SSI, claiming some phony disability and are living on SSI in a Section 8 apartment in a senior complex. Probably a good guess right? They put senior citizens in grave danger and will probably get a slap on the wrist and sent right back to live in the elderly housing... just a guess of course but probably pretty accurate. Either that or they are living in an apartment with one of their parents and are not on the lease but yet still live there...only in MA!
Geoff Burton April 15, 2014 at 10:40 pm
Kathleen I don't get the Massachusetts reference, having said that I think your about right.

Kathleen, your right. As for housing, the less number of homeless, the more grant money the city andRead More state receives for housing. It happens all the time in Pennsylvania. Free loaders like the crackheads mentioned in the story is why people who have legimate disabilities are judged as liars and have to fight for their rights.

Racism is not a factor in illegal immigration although a lot of our elected officials are using itRead More as a soap box. If Racism was the problem, Obama would not be in the White House, as he needed the White vote! Isreal and his cronies are worried about the upcoming election and know they are in deep trouble due to the fact that Democrats who voted for the party in 2012 have wised up and will vote them out. They want the illegal's to be able to vote, as the majority will vote Democrat. Our county as we know it is in deep trouble. As John Kennedy said "Ask not what your country can do for you, Ask what you can do for your country." Today, a large part of our population expects the country to do all!

It says Around Town but the headline is UTAH. Utah is not near Natick!! I think everyone should notRead More open an article on Patch unless they see their town's name in the headline. So If it doesn't say Natick, then we all know it is not LOCAL to the Natick Patch. The less clicks these Patch sites get, the fewer advertisers they will get and then perhaps they will realize if we want sensational news from across the country we'd go back to Patch's former owners AOL and the HuffPost! Those here from other Patch sites - I think you should do the same only click on articles that mention your community's name. No name. No click!

John the reports stated the vehicle was on fire. This was before the crash. Maybe the driver saw hisRead More tractor on fire and had a massive heart attack? Who knows.
John Chrusciel April 14, 2014 at 02:21 pm
Decaturette back in the days before collapsible steering shafts it was a bad idea to wear a seatbeltRead More because during a head on collision the steering shaft would act as a spear and run you through. I never wore a seat belt my old MGA or TR3. However, this is no longer a problem because of modern design and engineering. Some people will hem and haw about being t-boned at an intersection and the harm that a three point harness can do. I personally know many people who have had their lives saved by seat belts. I always wear mine. They should afford children the same opportunity to protect themselves. A 25 mile per hour head on collision with another vehicle travelling at 25 miles per hour is like a 50 mile per hour collision. So I do not buy the argument about shorter distances nor do I buy the article about lower driving speeds. What can is cost to have simple lap belts installed in a school bus? Are we that greedy?
Becky April 14, 2014 at 04:03 pm
I think the real reason they don't install them is that it would raise a whole other level ofRead More liability -- like that then they would have to keep the seatbelts in good working order, and maybe enforce that people wear them. Could I sue them because another passenger flew out of their seat and hit me. Etc, etc.
