Crime Log: Swastika Found on Utility Box

A look at recent criminal activity in Half Hollow Hills.

Information provided by Suffolk County Police Department. Police reported an incident of grand larceny May 11 in which credit cards were taken and used in front of a building on Broadhollow road in Melville. An incident of criminal mischief to a mailbox was reported on May 11 at Weaver Drive in Dix Hills. Police reported an incident of criminal mischief on May 12 in which youths were fighting with sticks on Commack Road in Dix Hills. An incident of criminal mischief to a fence was reported on May 11 at Colby Drive in Dix Hills. An incident of aggravated harassment was reported on May 10 at Caterina Court in Dix Hills. Dix Hills Gym Owner Found Guilty in Murder Plot

Christian Tarantino faces a third life sentence after convicted of conspiring to kill an informant.

A Dix Hills gym owner was found guilty in federal court in Central Islip on Monday of conspiring to kill an informant in a 2003 murder plot.  Christian Tarantino was convicted last year of two murders in 1994 and accused of Vincent Gargiulo's death, all in connection with an armored van robbery. Christian Tarantino, 43, is already facing two mandatory life sentenced for the previous murder convictions, and now he faces a third after a jury found him guilty of conspiring to have Gargiulo, the brother-in-law of Twisted Sister lead singer Dee Snider, killed. At his trial in last year, prosecutors accused Tarantino of orchestrating the death of Gargiulo, who was allegedly killed for having secretly recorded Tarantino’s admission of his …

Ex-Yankee faces four counts of child molestation Ex-Yankee Rosendo "Rusty" Torres made incriminating statements to police that led to felony charges of child molestation, court documents and police said. The former major leaguer and current youth baseball coach employed full time by the Town of Oyster Bay said he was sorry for incidents and stopped himself before further damage was done to his victim, court documents show. Torres was charged Tuesday in connection with two separate incidents of sex abuse involving an 8-year-old girl that occurred in Plainview. He pled not guilty on Wednesday to four felony counts of first-degree sexual abuse. Bail was set at $50,000. He is charged with abusing the child on two different occassions, once on …

Flames Engulf Melville Home

A house fire broke out Wednesday afternoon on Gwyne Road.

Flames ripped through a Melville home Wednesday afternoon, completely gutting the rear of the house. The Melville Fire Department received a call for an automatic fire alarm at 26 Gwyne Road shortly after 2 p.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the homeowner in the driveway with her four dogs as heavy smoke billowed out of the house, Melville's second assistant chief, Jason Bernfeld, said.  Additional crews from Dix Hills, Huntington Manor and Plainview were called in to assist in the fire as members of the East Farmingdale Fire Department manned the Melville headquarters. Update: LIE Lanes Reopened After Morning Crash

Fuel service box truck overturned at Exit 51 in Dix Hills after being struck by another vehicle.

All westbound lanes at Exit 51 on the Long Island Expressway are now open after a morning crash forced two lanes to be shutdown Thursday morning and early afternoon. Officials said the collision occurred at about 10:30 a.m. when the driver of a Honda hit a guardrail and median before crashing into a fuel service box truck. The Ford truck overturned, spilling small propane tanks and cartons of other chemicals onto the roadway. The tanks and chemicals did not leak or cause any major safety issue, police on the scene said. The crash caused traffic delays from Exits 51 to 53. The two right lanes at Exit 51 were shut down until 1:18 p.m., according to the state Department of Transportation website. Deer Park A Brooklyn man was arrested and charged with allegedly neglecting to provide proper care for his 95-year old mother who suffers with Alzheimer’s disease and lives in Deer Park, Suffolk County Police said. Joseph Coppa, 57, was charged with Endangering the Welfare of an Incompetent or Disabled person, according to police. Huntington A Long Island IT technician has been accused of taking iPhone video recordings in a faculty bathroom at Countrywood Primary Center in South Huntington, according to police. Van Driver Who Attempted to Lure Student Is Back

Police notify district that the man reportedly watched the child board the bus before driving off.

The driver of a van that approached a West Hollow Middle School student earlier this school year, was spotted again Monday morning, according to a school district safety alert. Suffolk County Police informed the Half Hollow Hills School District that at approximately 7:15 a.m., a West Hollow student noticed a suspicious vehicle while waiting for the bus near Oxford and Arlington Avenues. The vehicle stopped, and the driver watched the student before driving away, said the online alert. The vehicle, which is said to be a white commercial van with purple graffiti on the back and a darkened circle window on the side, matches the description of a vehicle that was recorded by police this past November. Fallen Long Island Officers Honored at Oheka Castle Gala [VIDEO]

Fundraiser for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund held Tuesday.

Three Long Island Law Enforcement Officers were recently remembered at the inaugural Honor at the Castle Gala held Tuesday at Oheka Castle in Huntington. The event was also a fundraiser for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which is building a National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, D.C. The event paid special tribute to fallen Nassau County police officers Geoffrey Breitkopf and Michael Califano, and ATF Officer John Capano. Family members of the late Michael Califano and John Capano were in attendance.
