The Dix Hills Chinese School offers classes ranging from Pre-K to 12th grade, as well as adult and Chinese…More as Second Language (CSL) classes.</p> <p>The Dix Hills Chinese Cultural Association (DHCCA), is  a nonprofit organization, providing an opportunity for members of the community to learn the Chinese language and to gain cultural understanding of Chinese heritage, traditions and customs. The school offers language and culture classes to people from both Chinese and non-Chinese speaking backgrounds.</p> <p>With the support of the Half Hollow Hills Central High School District, classes are held at Half Hollow Hills High School West, 375 Wolf Hill Rd., in Dix Hills. Every Friday from 7:00pm to 9:35pm during the school year, there are two periods of language classes followed by one period of culture classes. Culture classes include martial arts, painting, folk dancing, crafts and Chinese chess.</p> <p>Prospective students are welcome to visit during school hours on Fridays. Allen Junior/Senior High School, which is part of Western Suffolk BOCES (Board of Cooperative…More Educational Services), is for students ages 12-21 who present a range of disabilities and require intensive support to become successfully placed upon graduation in supportive employment, workshop placement or day treatment programs.  The students come from the 18 school districts within Western Suffolk BOCES. Classes are available for students requiring Option II, IIIA and IV class size mandates.</p> <p>Major emphasis is placed on developing work skills for placement following graduation. A variety of training opportunities for supportive employment, including a comprehensive Work Activities Center, is available. Many of the students participate in travel training to assist them in independent ambulation within the community. Most students participate in community-based vocational sites and receive training by working with non-disabled students.</p>

Half Hollow Hills High School East is one of two high schools in the school district; the other is High School…More West. Both serve grades nine through 12. Hills East is the larger of the two, as it once housed both a middle and a high school.</p> <p>It has two main offices, two gymnasiums, two auditoriums and two cafeterias, one of which has been converted to a weight room. It is located across the street from the Dix Hills branch of the Half Hollow Hills Community Library. High School East is the home of the red, white and black Thunderbirds.</p>

Sunquam Elementary School is one of seven elementary schools in the Half Hollow Hills Central School District. It is…More located on the most western side of the district and across the street from the Melville Branch of the Half Hollow Hills Community Library. Sunquam is a family of students, teachers, staff and parents also known as the "Sunquam Stars."</p> <p>Sunquam Elementary school was closed during the years of 1991 and 1999. On March 18, 1991, the Half Hollow Hills School Board voted to close Sunquam due to a significant reduction in state aid. Sunquam was the smallest school in the district and needed the most repairs. Closing the only school in the Western portion of the district, however, created an uproar in the community. Backed by the foresight, passion and dedication of Mrs. Alissa Sue Taff, the then current president of the Civic Association of Sweet Hollow, many attempts to sell Sunquam were thwarted. In March of 1999 the Half Hollow Hills School Board, faced with an influx of new housing,  and a lack of classrooms, voted unanimously to reopen the school in the fall of 1999.</p>
